Essential Oils that Harm Cats and Dogs

We know most houses want or have essential oils flowing through their diffusers, home remedies and candles. They come in a huge variety all targeting different desires like being calm, having clarity or fighting sickness just to name a few. But many that are beneficial to us as humans, are TOXIC to some of our most important family members - our pets.

Essential oils are usually extracted from plant matter to create a liquid with the essence or scent of the plant/s. They aren't actually oils in the scientific sense but either way they allow us to leap away from the common heavy chemicals in our daily lives and replace them with an all natural substitute.

Holistic remedies are all about be aware and mindful, and we're here to help that. Whether you're placing your essential oils on your pet or allowing them to breathe it in, they can still be affected. Heres a list of essential oils (but not limited to) to avoid for your pets sake.

DOGS

  • Citrus (d-limonene)
  • Pine oils
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Peppermint
  • Cinnamon
  • Pennyroyal

  • Eucalyptus 
  • Tea Tree (melaleuca)
  • Oregano
  • Thyme

 

 

SYMPTOMS OF POISONING

  • Essential oil scent on them or their excretions 
  • Trouble breathing
  • Abnormal drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Redness or burns on/in their mouth and skin
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Stumbling
  • Difficulty walking
  • Muscle tremors
  • Pawing at face

If you think you pet has been poisoned, contact your vet or emergency after hours vet immediately.

Make sure you:
  • Contact the vet
  • Immediately wash essential oils on fur and skin
  • Don’t give your pet any treatments without vets approval.
  • Take the specific oil to the vet with you
 
Keep you home and your pets surrounded with beautiful scents but safely - simply by avoiding these essential oils.
